🎭 Reminder: Apply Now for O\'Kane Theatre Scholarships (Deadline: Oct. 17)

Dear O’Kane Theatre Students,

 

This is a friendly reminder to apply for our theatre scholarships before the October 17, 2025 deadline. These awards recognize your hard work and dedication to the UHD theatre program — and they can help cover tuition, books, and other academic expenses.

All scholarship applications can be found through the UHD Scholarship Portal:

Below is a summary of each scholarship and its key requirements:

Charles & Betti Saunders Endowed Drama Scholarship

  • Minimum 6 semester credit hours (SCH) enrollment at UHD

  • At least 30 SCH completed (including transfer credits)

  • Minimum 2.5 GPA

  • Participation in two UHD productions or One-Act plays

  • Must remain active in theatre work during award semester

  • 4 awards, approx. $500 each

Maddocks Family Drama Scholarship

  • Enrolled in 6 SCH minimum

  • Completed 15 SCH (transfer accepted)

  • 2.5 GPA overall and in theatre courses

  • Participation in one UHD production or One-Act play

  • Active, professional involvement required

  • 1 award, approx. $500

Rockwell Scholarship

  • Enrolled in 6 SCH minimum

  • Completed 50 SCH

  • 3.0 GPA minimum

  • Participation in three UHD productions or One-Act plays

  • Funds may only cover UHD tuition, books, or fees

  • 2 awards, approx. $1,000 each

Dr. Tom Lyttle Endowment

  • Enrolled in 6 SCH minimum

  • Completed 30 SCH

  • 2.5 GPA overall and in theatre courses

  • Participation in one UHD production or One-Act play

  • Active involvement and professionalism required

  • 2 awards, approx. $500 each

Bill & Ann Bradshaw Stokes Drama Scholarship

  • Enrolled in 6 SCH minimum

  • 2.0 GPA or equivalent for incoming students

  • Must assist with theatre projects during award semester

  • Selection based on GPA, degree progress, theatre activity, and personal statement

  • 5 awards, approx. $500 each

University Theatre Scholarship

  • Enrolled in 6 SCH minimum

  • 2.0 GPA (or high-school GPA for first-year students)

  • Active participation in UHD productions required

  • 2 awards, approx. $500 each

Tips for Applicants:

  • Complete your general UHD scholarship application in addition to individual scholarships.

  • Highlight your theatre involvement and contributions in your application.

  • Apply early — don’t wait until the deadline!

“God of Carnage” Coming to UHD’s O’Kane Theatre

This fall, UHD’s O’Kane Theatre stages God of Carnage, Yasmina Reza’s biting dark comedy that peels back the polite veneer of civilized society. University of Houston-Downtown

The play centers on two sets of parents who meet to negotiate after a playground fight between their children. What begins as civil discussion soon descends into absurdity, revealing raw tensions, hypocrisies, and the primal instincts hiding beneath social norms.

Directed by Tim Klein, the production features a cast of four (two current students, two alumni), giving it an intimate but powerful feel.

For this staging, O’Kane Theatre will be transformed into a theatre-in-the-round space, with audience seating on all sides of the stage — intensifying the immersive and confrontational nature of the play.

Performance dates are Oct. 30 through Nov. 8, with most shows at 7:30 p.m. and a few matinees.
