ATA Internships

Students in the ATA program come from a variety of backgrounds and educational histories. Many of our scholars have professional working experience. In addition to being a highly motivated cohort of students, ATA Scholars benefit from targeted programming aimed at helping our students master critical career readiness competencies.

What is an Internship?

An internship:

  • Includes developing intentional learning objective goals that are structured into the experience and supervised by a professional with relevant and related background in the field
  • Promotes academic, career and/or personal development
  • Includes learning objectives, observation, reflection, and evaluation
  • Balances the intern's learning goals with the organization's needs
  • May be part-time or full-time
  • Involves industry related and soft skill development
  • May be carefully monitored and evaluated for academic credit
  • Provides adequate supervision in a reasonably safe environment with the necessary tools to perform the learning goals agreed upon for the duration of the internship

Internship Site Requirements

In order to satisfy the experiential learning requirement for the Accelerated Transfer Academy program, an internship must meet the following minimum criteria. An internship must:

  • Have a position description that fully outlines the projects, duties and responsibilities expected of the intern
  • Align with student academic and/or career goals. No more than 15% of an intern's effort should be put towards clerical or errand tasks (unless related to academic or career goals) such as making coffee, copies, answering phones, etc.
  • The intern should NOT replace work that would otherwise be done by a full time employee
  • Have stated outcomes for student interns at the completion of the internship. These outcomes should align with at least 5 of the 8 career competencies.
  • Have a designated staff member to supervise interns
  • Be comprised of at least 120 internship hours verified by supervisor by way of weekly timesheets
