Details

Service to others is a hallmark of the University of Houston-Downtown, and GatorServe is a UHD tradition. GatorServe brings together UHD students, staff, faculty, friends, families, and community partners to complete projects in service to its neighbors for the two National Days of Service in remembrance of 9/11 and to commemorate Martin Luther King Jr.

The upcoming National Day of Service in memory of September 11th will be the 25th anniversary of the tragedy and this GatorServe will be a special one to honor this day. UHD students, staff, and faculty will volunteer on Saturday, Sep. 12, 2026, at the Houston National Cemetery in partnership with JustServe and the Houston Department of Neighborhoods. Volunteers will be involved in various service such as headstone aligning & cleaning; raking, cleaning & sweeping of grounds. All necessary supplies will be provided. After check in, a special ceremony will be held where we will hear from those who were at Ground Zero among other meaningful memorials.

The National Cemetery is located at 10410 Veterans Memorial Drive, Houston, Texas, United States, 77038-1502. Carpooling is highly recommended as parking is only available along the cemetery roads.

*8:30 - 9:30 AM: Check In and Registration
9:30 - 10 AM: Opening Ceremony
10:15 - 11:30 AM: Cemetery Beautification Volunteering
11:30 - Noon: Wrap-up and Lunch

*For those that need transportation assistance, two vans will be departing from UHD at 8:00 am to get everyone to check in by 8:30. If you would like to take advantage of the van service, please email durhamg@uhd.edu to claim a spot.

Important Registration Information
When registering, select only one option. Multiple registrations will be deleted.
Members of the UHD community should log in using their UHD credentials rather than creating a guest account.
Only pre-approved volunteers may select the Event Hospitality / Lead registration option. Unapproved registrations will be deleted.
